Five simple steps to choose world-class keynote speakers.

1. Decide your keynote topic - but be open to discuss

Be clear what messages / topics / themes you want the keynote to include.

But every world-class keynote speaker has huge experience in delivering life-changing corporate events.

So be open to their own thoughts about what is really working well in corporate events at the moment.

Often a subtle twist on a main theme can transform an entire event into an electrifying, energising experience.

2. Focus on your audience - secret of every world-class keynote speaker

All the best keynote speakers in the world know that total audience focus is what makes the difference.

Clients have priorities, CEOs have strategies to communicate, targets to deliver, visions to unfold.  But the key is understanding your participants.

And this matters even more with client-facing events.

What really matters to your audience and why - RIGHT NOW. What is most likely to be top of mind at the time of the actual event?

3. Watch keynote videos - by your proposed speaker

Look for high energy, passion, strong audience engagement, engaging ideas, relevance, customisation, credibility, persuasiveness.

A common mistake is to insist on a video on precisely your session title.

As we have seen, the secret is customisation.  So look for evidence of this.

Every world-class keynote speaker should be able to point you to a vast range of topics, themes, adaptations - as evidence that they really DO listen to the brief; really DO customise.

A huge risk when selecting a world-class keynote speaker is to settle for someone who is a one-message, one-book person.  They've maybe made a career out of one big job they did a while back.

4. Seek recommendations from others who have booked world-class keynote speakers

Colleagues or speaker agencies can add to your own shortlist.

There is nothing like personal recommendation - remember it's more than about how the person actually delivered on-stage.

It's also about whether they were a pleasure to work with, turned up on time, were respectful and honouring of the company, were generous with their time in conversations with participants and so on.

5. Interview your shortlist

How well do these keynote speaker actually  listen?

Do they really get what you want to achieve?  Are they really going to customise for you?  Do you like and trust them?

A world-class keynote speaker is someone who becomes a friend and close support as the event draws near.

Example:

I've given over a thousand keynotes during the last few years, mainly for the largest 2000 companies in the world. Key questions when anyone contacts me are about their reasons for the event, what they want to achieve, who the audience are, what the rest of the event programme is, where this keynote will be positioned in the whole narrative of the event, and how my keynote should fit into this to create a life-changing and entertaining, highly memorable audience experience.
