Predict your nation's future from demographics

If you want to predict a wide range of trends in your own region, nation, city, community or for your company, take a look at demographics.  That's why governments focus so much time on these things - regardless of political party.

Take birth rates for example, and collapse in numbers of children in almost all developed nations over the last 20-30 years, together with huge decline in family size in many emerging markets as average household incomes rise. 

Countries that don't make enough babies to offset net migration and deaths have falling populations - a trend which can only be offset by additional inward migration.

This really matters for size of future economy, and for government income from future taxes.  

Actually it matters for everything - including national security - which is why President Putin over 20 years ago declared that low birth rates in Russia were a major issue for the future protection of the nation. Russia's own population is falling by 500,000 a year (not including deaths from war).

What does all this mean for corporate strategy?

Companies rightly focus on customers, getting products and services right, keeping costs competitive and so on.

But for longer term planning, demographics is also key - selecting new markets to invest in, new sectors or products to develop.
