Our future will be a world of paradoxes and to every megatrend you can find another smaller trend which appears to oppose it.  This is certainly the case in retail.  We are seeing migration of middle earning consumers down market away from their favourite aspirational brands towards budget brands because for many households, times are hard right now (late 2011).  But at the very same time we are seeing massive growth in the super-league. Ultra-wealthy people who will settle for nothing but world-class best of the best at whatever price.
