Imagine a mobile phone with a charge that lasts a month, and
runs off cigarrette lighter fuel - methanol. Direct Methanol Fuel
Cells (DMFCs) use a platinum catalyst to convert methanol to hydrogen
and carbon dioxide at room temperature. Prototypes from companies
like Smart Fuel Cells are already here, powerful enough to drive
a laptop for many hours. Other methanol fuel cell prototypes are
the size of credit cards using diffusion membrane technology.
Key challenges include costs of methanol ampoules, whether airlines
would allow methanol devices in hand luggage or coat pockets,
sensitivity to moevement and extremes of temperature. A compromise
might be methanol recharging of conventional batteries, or using
methanol power packs instead of power sockets for long term use.
3G phones are notoriously power-hungry and all 3G manufacturers
are developing fuel cell technology, including Sony, Toshiba and
NEC.
