Q+A: Future costs of freight? When will container shipping costs fall to normal? Reasons for supply chain crisis. Predictions for future cost of shipping. Future of Logistics and Supply Chains Keynote Speaker

Futurist Keynote Speaker: Posts, Slides, Videos - Manufacturing, Logistics, Supply Chain Keynotes

Q+A at Seminarium Chile on future of logistics and supply chain management - by keynote speaker Patrick Dixon.

"I have shipping costs risen from - say - $800 per container to over $9000 for the same journey and what next? (July 2022). In my Futurist book The Future of Almost Everything, I predicted that Central Banks would tend to encourage inflation rather than risk deflation (whatever they say publicly). And that prices for commodities etc would fluctuate widely. And both turned out to be correct....In no other market is a 10 fold increase in costs sustainable for long without massive investment as people look to make money from shortages and crisis, which will increase capacity. And then of course the market is likely to overshoot with overcapacity for a while."...

Q+A How to tackle shortage of truck drivers. Why truck driver crisis really matters and how too solve it. Road freight trends. Seminarium: Logistics Supply Chain Keynote Speaker - VIDEO

Futurist Keynote Speaker: Posts, Slides, Videos - Manufacturing, Logistics, Supply Chain Keynotes

Q+A to Patrick Dixon, Keynote Speaker on Logistics and Supply Chain risks - about severe shortages of truck drivers in many nations. Why is this and how to tackle truck driver shortages. Impact on many sectors ranging from manufacturing to retail.

In each nation the reasons for shortages of truck drivers are different.

Like most major trends in logistics and supply chain management, the issue has been obvious for a very long time. For example, in nations like UK, Germany and Chile, the average age of truck drivers has been around 50 years or older. Young people have not been attracted into road freight because of multiple factors which need addressing urgently....

I predicted many times future global threats from new pandemics

I have warned for over two decades about significant threats to manufacturing, logistics and supply chains from new mutant viruses which appear roughly once a year, usually emerging in Southern China (for reasons unclear), just one of many potential Wild Cards that could strike down successful global manufacturing business.  For example, when the SARS outbreak began to threaten our world in 2003, my media warnings about the threats from new mutant viruses reached an audience of over 300 million.

How to Communicate Bad News to Customers. Crisis management - example from logistics and supply chains disruptions. TRUST REALLY MATTERS. Act FAST, be transparent, keep clients updated, work together to find solutions. Logistics keynote speaker

Futurist Keynote Speaker: Posts, Slides, Videos - Manufacturing, Logistics, Supply Chain Keynotes

If your business is hit by a crisis, ALWAYS let your customers know what is happening and do it FAST.

The worst thing in the world is for an important client to learn about an event from the media or someone else other than you.

This principle of open, clear, concise, accurate, instant information is absolutely key to maintaining trust when things start to go wrong.

Let your clients know what is happening, why, what you are doing about it immediately and when the next update will be.

This applies in logistics and supply chain management but also in every other sector, whether manufacturing, oil and gas, retail, construction, aviation, hospitality, banking, insurance and so on.

Within seconds a bad story can become a destructive hurricane unless you are seen to respond rapidly, responsibility, with empathy and humility.

Futurist Keynote Speaker: Posts, Slides, Videos - Manufacturing, Logistics, Supply Chain Keynotes

Comment on visit to Serge Ferrari factory.

They make a stunning range of membranes for things like canopies over concert halls or football stadiums. It's easy to get swept along by a story about high-tech, digital controls. automation and robotics but the future of manufacturing is also about inspiring people to achieve new levels of excellence and performance, reliability and cost control. Yes we need all these digital tools, but you still need people to design, install, monitor and manage, and that means motivating high performance teams every day to make the difference.

"I always enjoy factory visits - the physicality of it all is exciting, with perfection the constant goal, every time, without interruption in a continuous process which is always astonishing to watch".

10 Truths about Brexit - cut through the media nonsense and political posturing. Why longer term impact will be less than many think. How border issues between UK and Ireland will be resolved - in event of a No Deal Brexit. ARTICLE

Futurist Keynote Speaker: Posts, Slides, Videos - Manufacturing, Logistics, Supply Chain Keynotes

Many of my previous predictions have turned out to be correct as of September 2018: for example no immediate economic meltdown, fall in currency leads to rise in exports and so on.

Here is a common sense view of what is likely to happen in the event that the EU and UK fail to achieve an agreement before the UK leaves the EU.

1. The pound will fall further against the Euro

This will make all exports of goods and services even more affordable for other nations to buy, and will make imports even more expensive.  If the pound falls a further 10% post Brexit, then the total fall since the vote to leave will be 25%.

2. EU import taxes will be almost irrelevant to UK exports

Let us take an average tax of 5% on any UK goods imported into the EU from the UK, and the other way round.  How much impact would that actually have when you take the new exchange rate into account?

British goods will be net 20% cheaper for French or German people to buy than before.  That's huge by any measure.

French and German goods will be net 30% more expensive for British people to buy.  Even more significant.

Net impact: far greater on companies exporting to the UK.  In any case, the rest of the world takes more UK goods than the EU, and the EU is rapidly falling as an export destination.

90% of global trade will continue to be container shipping. Cities with large container ports will continue to be hubs for manufacturing, logistics and supply chains for the next 100 years. Future of logistics and supply chain keynote speaker VIDEO

Futurist Keynote Speaker: Posts, Slides, Videos - Manufacturing, Logistics, Supply Chain Keynotes

Future patterns of supply chains and trade.

90% of all products / goods are carried by sea - shipping containers. This supply chain trend will continue for the next 50 years and beyond.

Shipping will always be lower cost over medium to long distance than trucking or rail freight, for manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers.

That's because of the laws of physics - large container ships are highly energy efficient per kilometre per ton of freight, compared to rail freight or road freight / trucking.

It's the reason why cities with sea ports are usually larger and wealthier than cities without sea access.

Large cities with efficient container ports will always win a competitive advantage as hubs for manufacturing, distribution, logistics and supply chains.
