The volcano eruption has forced millions of people to think the unthinkable: a world without air travel.  Its impact  across Europe is nothing compared to the possible impact of global warming by 2050. Such eruptions remind us of the vast energy beneath our feet, which could power our future. There is 250,000 times more geothermal energy available than is currently used – enough to power the lives of 7 billion people many times over, so long as it can be distributed from the most suitable sites to where it is needed.

True Cost of Global Warming

The truth is that there are very few solid facts when it comes to global warming science.  Loads of data, loads of opinions, loads of theories and models of the future, but very little history.  And that is what we need more of to be 100% sure. Extreme statements and dire warnings have already gripped the imagination of billions of people.  But what is the truth?  What is the real evidence linking carbon dioxide to climate change, and how can we be sure this is mainly due to human activity, and not some massive over-reaction drummed up by eco-freaks and business speculators.  How hot will things really have to get before there is a catastrophe?  Are we already too late to change the future?

Carbon capture is the only way to burn fossil fuels without damaging the environment and our future will depend on it.  Carbon Capture means collecting carbon dioxide gas from coal, oil or gas-fired power stations, and storing it permanently underground (sequestration). It is the most important way to reduce carbon emissions in electricity production, is available now and could be scaled up very rapidly. The size of the carbon market over the next 20 years could be greater than $500 billion – a single carbon capture and storage installation at a large plant can cost up to $1 billion to build.

The 10 step Carbon Diet to save our future

Expect much of our world to adopt a strict carbon diet.  As with any diet you can eat what you like from time to time.  It’s the overall balance that really matters.  So with carbon dieting we can expect people will make choices.  We may chose for example to continue to burn a lot of carbon in planes, but still be carbon-light because so little carbon is used in future in heating our homes or driving our cars.   CARBON DIET - 10 letters in the two words describe 10 steps.

Carbon Offsetting - Global Warming Action

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube videoCarbon offsetting is a vitally important, but controversial way to tackle climate change. Every business should consider carbon offsetting as an integral part of strategy and responsibility. It allows one business to fund energy savings in another, and to use those savings as a credit or allowance against its own energy use. It works because it is often cheaper to save a ton of carbon in another company rather than your own. There are many challenges eg proving rapid, genuine benefit, preventing fraud - or making corporations lazy about own energy savings. Carbon offsetting should only be carried out after taking vigorous action to reduce your own personal or corporate carbon emissions / energy consumption. £7bn was spent from 2002-2007 investing in carbon-reducing schemes. In 2005 HSBC became a carbon-neutral bank. In 2007 KLM airline announced they would offset all growth in carbon use. Carbon offsetting is a vitally important, but controversial way to tackle climate change. Offsetting could be our most powerful weapon to control carbon emissions by creating a large source of new funds for energy saving / carbon emissions reduction.

Roof Gardens Impact on Energy Saving

Roof gardens keep flat roofs cool in Summer – and also help insulate in winter.  They require little maintenance and reduce energy bills significantly. 12% of roofs are “green” in Germany already, and Tokyo law requires at least 20% of all new roofs to be “green”.  Studies on Chicago City Hall after installation  showed that roof temperatures fell by up to 30 degrees C on hot summer days and surrounding areas were cooler by 9 degrees C.  We know that with every degree less difference between internal and external temperature, the fuel bill can fall by up to 10%.

Turning food into fuel has been widely promoted by many national leaders as a great way to beat the fuel crisis, while also reducing reliance on unstable oil and gas suppliers.  However biofuels have also been blamed for higher food prices, food shortages in the poorest nations, hunger riots and fall of governments. US market for biodiesel is  larger than a billion gallons a year and Federal directives require this to rise to at least 36 billion gallons a year by 2022.  The European Union requires at least 5.75% of all transport fuel to be made from biofuel by 2010, rising to 10% by 2020.
